How to change your Emotional State

One of the greatest daily challenges we all face is how to manage our own internal emotional state…especially in difficult situations.

How do you currently deal with challenges?

  • Do you feel the anger rise and boil?
  • Do you follow this with a verbal or physical outburst?
  • Do you have an emotional melt down?
  • Do you throw yourself into activity to stop you thinking about the difficult situation?

Within Neuro linguistic Programming (NLP) there is no such thing as an un-resourceful person, just an un-resourceful state. By being able to manage your state so that you are able to remain resourceful, even in the most challenging situations it is clearly of huge value and benefit whatever you do, wherever you are, both personally and professionally.

How to deal with Challenges

One of the greatest challenges we all face is managing our own internal emotional state, especially in difficult situations. How do you deal with challenges? Do you like your friends to console you? Do you feel the boil of anger rise followed by a verbal or physical outburst or do you throw yourself head first into activity to stop you from thinking about the difficult situation?

In NLP, there is no such thing as an un-resourceful person, just an un-resourceful state. The workplace is a Bear pit

The workplace today is a bear pit! Targets, procedures, policies and that’s before you start with the human expectation – productivity, performance &presence.  All contribute to the impact work has on our being, our state. As human beings we constantly process and deal with the pressures and stresses created in our life and take them with us to work and vice versa. Back and forth – back and forth!

Continued stress knocks us out of balance so our state slides into the negative where we slip into the danger zone-more so if we remain there for chunks of time. We know stress can enhance performance, it can be healthy but only when it’s managed, in small chunks interspersed with harmony brought about by rest, relaxation and the ability to switch off to re-balance the levels.

I’m a great believer in self-help but I also know that if we seek support and help then often the solution we arrive at is more powerful than if we had merely relied on self alone. It stands to reason really that as individuals we are not able to challenge ourselves in a balanced manner… for me it tends to be all or nothing!

I am an avid supporter of the premise that if you can’t change the situation then change your attitude. Coaching differs in so many ways from counselling, mentoring or consulting although many of the skills are similar.  We ask questions, we listen, we ask more questions and we build rapport. We don’t judge, advise or coerce.

As coaches, we focus on the future and empower our clients to discover their own answers through our intuitive questioning. We measure this activity through encouraging the client to establish goals for themselves, based on their own reality, define and work towards actions to achieve the goal and a sense of personal achievement!

But what if the goal lacks purpose? What if it’s a short term goal and delivers a short term hit? Do you need more of them to feel the same level of achievement and fulfilment?

Life is too short!

How many times have you heard the comment “life is too short”?

Well it can be! I’m not talking about living today as if it is your last; Blowing the mortgage on a holiday of a life time, weekends spent in luxurious spa’s around the world or a spending spree on beautiful clothes to fill your wardrobe. What I’m talking about is being in the moment. Noticing the things around you…bird song in the morning before you get up and welcome the day in…stunning sunsets, the first snowdrops, bulbs pushing through ground and  the language you use. By framing things in the positive it makes you more positive and upbeat. It changes your body language and how you hold yourself.
